Stella McCartney's Dressed-Down Rules

STELLA MCCARTNEY's spring/ summer 2018 collection was a masterclass in modern dressed-down style. From the joy of jumpsuits to making taffeta look easy, here's her guide to looking great without looking like you've tried too hard

Invest In A Jumpsuit
If there was one item that summed up the relaxed, Stella McCartney spirit for spring 2018, it was the jumpsuit. Hers came tailored with a sharp shoulder and a pegged, boyish trouser or as roomy boiler suits in mustard khaki cotton or yellow acid wash denim. "They're effortless and the ease that you have, as a woman knowing they're in your wardrobe makes them essential," said McCartney. "They're the best thing to fall back on and they're pretty much my uniform."

Dial Down The Glamour
McCartney acknowledged that although her house is best know for daywear she's not averse to dressing up, but approaches it her way. She went back to her own wardrobe and collection of vintage frilled and flounced evening gowns. " I have all those dresses but they're all chopped, when I wore them I didn't want to wear the real thing. I wanted to destroy it so that was what I brought onto the runway," she said. So there were taffeta ball skirts, but worn with simple oversized tees and frilled dresses that copied the shape of classic ball gowns but draped softly on the body. McCartney deliberately made her taffeta looked like nylon. "We pressed everything," explained McCartney of her modern approach to finery. "We flattened everything. We cut them
off and let the linings come out we cut the hems," she said. "It's about taking that high and providing the low to it."

Embrace The Vest Dress
The easiest option of the season is the vest dress. Pull it over your head and go. McCartney showed hers layered up and in neutral colours. Backstage, she spoke of her desire to create pieces that felt, "In the moment. That's our woman. It's that attitude that comes with the house.

Gabriela Hearst Launches The Most Philanthropic Of Flash Sales (photos)

AKE note: Woolmark winner, CFDA finalist and all-round fashion favourite Gabriela Hearst is cutting the waiting list for her cult collection of leather bags and launching an exclusive edit on Net-a-Porter for one week only, giving away all of the money she makes from selling the bags to the e-commerce platform at wholesale price to Save The Children. Why you ask? The designer is attempting to raise $600,000 in the next seven days to be able to donate monthly cash transfers to families in the Turkana region of Kenya where famine and dehydration is having a devastating impact on approximately 3.5 million people. In other words, it's the most philanthropic of flash sales on the designer's part. The Ella bag, one of the styles on sale at Net-a-Porter.com "The UN is calling it the worst humanitarian emergency since World War Two," the designer told us as the collection launched online. "The drought wasn't getting enough coverage so when I learnt that Save Th...

For the last two years the catwalks have been awash with sulking teenagers hiding in their hoodies, huge trailing trousers and enormous coats inside of which you could shelter a small family and their fridge. But with the look now filtering down to the high streets, fashion is off again in another direction. Paris Fashion Week has been remarkable for how the Spring/Summer collections are bringing clothes back to the body, with a much closer cut to shake off the studied sha...
